My great grandfather, Rev. Lafayette Franklin Vance, had a son, Frank Luther Vance, Sr, who passed away at Good Samaritan-Waverly Hospital on September 8, 1959 from lung cancer six years after his father passed there. Frank was an older brother of Emory Wallace Vance, Sr., and their mothers were sisters. Emory's mother was Lula Johnson Vance who had married Lafayette after the death of Frank's mother Nunia Johnson Vance. Nunia's name is spelled wrong on the death certificate. It's funny because Nula look like a combination of Lula and Nunia.
He had suffered from lung cancer for two and a half months and R. Morgan, MD of 1900 Oak St. in Columbia was his physician. Frank and his wife, Wilhelmina Burton Vance, lived at 2137 Barhamville Road in Columbia, SC which was not too far from the hospital.
My mother, Edna Foster, fondly remembers her visits to Uncle Frank's and Aunt Bill's. This is the same house where their daughter Lutherine Vance Smith used to live until her death recently.
Frank Luther Vance, Sr. Wilhelmina Burton Vance
When my family moved to Columbia, I took my daughter to visit with Lutherine. She grew to adulthood having some of the same experiences as my mother.
