Documented Columbus McClure's Probate Record in Alabama, Wills and Probate Records, 1753-1999

"Prominent Woodlawn Citizen is Victim of Crossing Crash," Columbus McClure's death, Newspapers.com, "The Birmingham Reporter," Birmingham, Alabama, 8 March 1930, column 4, page 8, <https://www.newspapers.com/image/605576767/>

Back in 2016 we journeyed to Birmingham, Alabama to search for information on Ellis' paternal side of the family. We actually searched the newspapers on microfilm to find an for Columbus McClure (D. 1930), his grandfather, obituary at the Birmingham Public Library. We could never find it. Low and behold, this covid-19 season, we found it on Newspapers.com. His name was not in the title of the article soo that's probably why we could not find it in 2016.

This got me to thinking. Columbus left property to his wife, Coreain, and sons, Columbus Jr. and Archie McClure. We were not able to find this either in 2016, but I tried searching Alabama, Wills and Probate Records, 1753-1999. I found a folder with 17 items in it: Columbus McClure in the Alabama, Wills and Probate Records, 1753-1999. We really felt great about this discovery.

You would think that was all that could be said about Columbus McClure, but that is only part of the story. Remember he died 2 March 1930? This is his family later in April on the 1930 Census:

"United States Census, 1930," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9R78-QN8?cc=1810731&wc=QZXB-3P3%3A648803601%2C649117201%2C649809601%2C1589282381 : 9 December 2015), Alabama > Jefferson > Birmingham > ED 59 > image 68 of 148; citing NARA microfilm publication T626 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 2002).

His wife owned a home valued at $6000.00. That is equivalent to $88,067 today. His sons worked as drivers. The sons finally settled in the North. Every summer Archie McClure drove two of his sons down there in the summer. My husband, Ellis, got to see what farm life was all about. Eventually, Coreain moved up North closer to her sons. I will attempt to tell some of Ellis McClure's stories here on this blog.
