A Basic Plan for Searching for Your Ancestor Among Genealogy Society Records

Do you need to contact a genealogy society in the place where your ancestor lived to see if they have any leads or information for you to follow? Sometimes you might find other people have been researching your same people in the area where they lived.

To find the name and address of the genealogy society you can look them up on the Research Wiki. For example, I looked up one in Shelby County, Tennessee:

Join

By clicking on "Join," I found that members get the "Privilege of submitting two FREE queries each year. These queries will be published in the Tennessee Genealogical Magazine, Ansearchin' News, and on this website." So, a 1 year membership includes getting my query out to other members. That alone makes joining worth it. I can send the following question:

Question

Ask specific questions. For example, "Can you tell me if Ora Nelms Foster, who lived in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee in 1940, appears in any local histories of genealogies in your collections?"

The query will be published in the Tennessee Genealogical Magazine, Ansearchin' News, and on this website. This means my question will go out to members who can respond if they know anything about Ora.

By joining, I can also contact other member who are researching the same surnames in their Surname Research. There are also many other kind of benefits for members such as presentations, GoToWebinars, the last 10 years issues of Ansearchin' News, and more!
