It's important to make sure you check all types of historic newspapers student, community, school, and town. For example, your ancestor's death may have been it the community newspaper and in the school newspaper. Also, one database may not contain all the historic newspapers. You may have to go to another database or to an offline resource to view the historic newspaper you need.
If I wanted to see what historic newpapers existed for Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina I would go to Chronicling America: Fayetteville, but that does not give me all the historic newspapers that exist. DigitalNC shows Fayetteville had a historic newspaper Fayetteville Educator (Fayetteville, N.C.). The historic newspaper was contributed by The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture and Charlotte Mecklenburg Library.
One reference for your ancestor could be the Fayetteville Educator, and another could be an article found in the Fayetteville Observer, an historic town newspaper. I could only find the Fayetteville Observer (Fayetteville, N.C.) online for July 3, 1851 – March 9, 1865 at DigitalNC.
